英文創作工作坊 (II)： 散文可以有多散？

國立政治大學外文中心於10月8日為因應第一屆「政大與我」英文創作比賽，特別邀請台大外文系教授彭鏡禧為政大學生作一場演講。前往聽演講的師長與同學反應熱烈，也收穫良多。

彭鏡禧教授第一次以「散文」為主題作演講，他衣著復古的中國裝，以一口流利的英文拉開演講的序幕。教授以一篇優美的散文為例，帶著同學用賞析的角度閱讀文章。該篇散文為美國著名文學家，童書《夏綠蒂的網》的作者E.B.White所著。

藉由散文的閱讀與賞析，從中介紹散文的特色，分析散文的結構，教導大家如何應用，以及如何解讀。他強調散文不是一種隨意的文學，也不像一般大眾認為，散文是沉悶、了無新意，而是能像詩一樣具有音韻及修辭的美感。他表示，長短句和倒裝句的運用及譬喻都能使散文更生動、更趣味。

彭鏡禧教授表示，學好英文作文，必須大量閱讀名作家的作品，並且從中學習漂亮句子的修辭方式，甚至可以更進一步的仿寫全文，如此一來，便能熟稔英文的句型，英文作文也能更有邏輯。而且，多閱讀散文可以提升自己的文化內涵，在和人應對時，才會讓別人覺得自己是個有內容及深度的人，使得談話不流於膚淺及空洞。最後他強調，散文不是學術論文，除了看得懂之外，也要細細咀嚼文章的內容。

彭鏡禧教授是密西根大學比較文學博士，過去曾在政治大學任教過，擅長莎士比亞文學的翻譯，曾獲得一九八八年梁實秋文學獎翻擇及散文翻譯第一名，二○○○年中國文藝獎章「文學翻譯獎」得主。結束前，彭鏡禧教授給政大的學生一句話：「Enjoy what you are doing！只有當自己在做喜歡的一件事，才能把事情做完。」

英文創作工作坊 (I)：英詩真、好、玩

為因應第一屆「政大與我」英文創作比賽，外文中心特別於10月6日邀請政大退休英語系教授夏燕生老師，撥空前來與同學分享讀英詩的趣味。

演講中與參與者分享了13首詩, 包括John Hollander的 A One-line Poem, Robert Frost的The Span of Life與Nothing Gold Can Stay, 以及Linda Pastan的Marks與To a Daughter Leaving Home。

夏老師表示讀英詩不但可以學英文, 更能幫助自我成長; 最後也勉勵同學能從易懂的詩、與學英文有關的詩、和與生活經驗相近的英詩來著手入門.

On Writing Prose

上一篇欣賞了Estelle老師的散文作品後，Estelle老師想和我們同學分享對散文寫作的心得：

On Writing Prose

There are also quite a few websites instructing you how to do creative writing. I did not read their instruction closely; however when I wrote my little article—“The New Leaves,” I also followed the three steps I provided for poetry writing.

To begin with, I do feel a lot about the seasonal changes on our campus whenever I go strolling on the hill or along the river bank. I remember clearly that I was once shocked to find the beautiful maple trees on the hill severely sick. The following spring, I was tremendously delighted to find them blooming.

Last year, I also felt bad that my best friend in my department got retired. Seeing young faces on campus or in class only made me sigh with sorrow. How life goes on noiselessly and swiftly!

Then, I connected the two things together and wrote my little article. To overcome the sad feelings of the ebb and flow of our life, I found strength and enlightenment in the maple trees when I composed the article. Finally some extra work was done to make the article smoother and more with literary playfulness.

I believe if you listen to the class outside a classroom, if you take a walk on the sports field at sunset, if you visit the campus restaurants at noon, if you sit down in our library, you’ll have interesting discoveries. Then, do not hesitate to write down what you feel, see, hear, or even smell and taste. You’ll find such English writing quite rewarding.

The New Leaves

在Estelle上次分享了一首這麼美麗的詩和她的寫作心得後，相信同學們將對英文創作會更有概念。

除了詩的創作外，此次全校英文創作比賽中，另一個比賽項目是散文(prose)。所以這周我們的Estelle老師，在自學中心部落格上面，就安排和大家分享一篇Nccu & Me的散文，請同學們細細體會這當中的美囉。

The New Leaves

The maple trees stand erectly along the Hill Drive. In the light of August, the sharp green leaves glitter in the hot summer breeze. It is amazing to see the exuberance of these tall maple trees again because a year ago they were severely devastated by some unknown pests.

Seeing the maple leaves dying in multitude and the tree trunks wrapped in the pests’ silken gossamer, I called the school’s Office of General Affairs anxiously. “Oh, don’t worry. The trees will grow again next spring,” answered the lady on the other end of the phone line confidently. She was right. I saw the sprouts of the green on the twigs in March. And here they are, standing like guards along the Hill Drive and waving their numerous little green hands at me when I go uphill.
As these maple trees growing in the natural cycle, many freshmen wil

l come to school in mid September. The campus will be filled with young faces with excitement. The Zhinan Road outside of the East Gate will be packed with students seeking a nice spot in restaurants at meal times. The dins of the students will soon bring life to this university, now slumbering quietly in the summer vacation ambience.

Yes! Soon a new generation of students, young, flustered, but hopeful will come. They will sit in the classrooms absorbing teachers’ lectures like sponge. They will dance with sweat in front of the windows on the balcony of the Administration Building. They will practice singing enthusiastically the school song for the Culture Cup Contest somewhere on campus. They will play croquet gracefully on the green grass of the sports field. They will line up politely for the school bus for the classes uphill. They will discuss questions intently for their group oral presentation under the trees in the Roman Square. They will study avidly in the Reading Room of the Library for their big exams…

Wait!

Didn’t these students just go through these things not long ago? Didn’t we just attend their graduation ceremony and have photos taken with them?...

As the beautiful maple trees along the Hill Drive, our students “grow” again. At the same time when many teachers are retiring one after another, these new leaves come to this hilly college town. These new leaves shall embrace the following four years with the same exuberance.

Sharing about the last poem from Estelle

I am a novice at English poetry writing; hence, I cannot teach you the best ways to write a poem in English. However, I’d like to share with you how I wrote my little poem, “The Scent of the Summer Rain.”

To be honest, I first composed this poem in Chinese last summer. I translated it into English when I was asked to offer some tips for this NCCU English Creative Writing Contest. Below is what I experienced when I wrote this poem.

1. Inspiration, emotion, and experience
I walked around the hills in NCCU every morning during my medical treatment last summer. Although it was hot, I was always soothed while hiking in the hills. One rainy morning, I particularly felt I could sense the quintessence of summer intuitively through some of my sensory systems. This became the birth of the preliminary idea of my little poem.

2. Drafting
I began putting down what I felt about the fresh green grass, what I smelled from the depth of the trees, what I heard from the road side of the hills, and what I saw in the distant Chinese-painting-like sky. I tried to capture the tranquil, light, happy, solitary embrace of the summer rain.

3. Revising
But these feelings and senses were not very concrete or precise; consequently, I revised the diction and syntax of the poem repeatedly. To make my poem appealing and fun, I also paid attention to the choice of words, the dividing of each line and stanza, the inversion of the sentence order, the usage of images and symbols, etc.

With my assistant Colleen’s help, I found a website which teaches how to write poetry. I believe you would learn a lot more by clicking on www.poetrymagic.co.uk. This website also includes a list of textbooks. By all means, visit similar websites to gain more.

I only want to add the last tips—walk around NCCU or revisit your memories about your life at NCCU, and put your feelings down in English. Enjoy the joy and pain of writing poems in English!

The Scent of the Summer Rain on the Round-Top Circle

In the soft drizzle on the Round-Top Circle of
the green hill, suddenly was enlightened my nose;
I smelled the summer rain

In the tenacity of the wild exuberant grass,
the summer rain enveloped itself

Humming on the twigs of the acacia trees,
it embraced the serenity of
the bashful yellow puffy flowers

Near the closing summer,
it greeted me with the loud passion
of cicadas and bulbuls
on the motley koelreuteria trees

Peeking from the blue bright sky
breaking through the iron gray layers of
clouds, it splashed ink on the vaulted canvas
briskly like a naughty imp

Cooling every pore of the loner
with its fresh, patient, loud, and bright scent
the summer rain rained on

Third Step to Writing Creatively: De-cluttering, Stephen King’s Secret Weapon 英文創作第三招：史蒂芬‧金的祕密武器「清除雜物」

Now you have the draft of a story, and your job is half done. The next crucial step is editing. Stephen King, a best-selling writer of our time, generously shares with us his secrets to success in his book, On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft. In a word, Stephen King’s secret weapon is de-cluttering.

At a young age, Stephen King met John Gould, editor of a local newspaper, who taught him the most important lesson about editing. Gould edited King’s story by removing words and phrases, and making sentences more concise:

“I only took out the bad parts, you know,” Gould said. “Most of it’s pretty good.”
…

“When you write a story, you’re telling yourself the story,” he said. “When you rewrite, your main job is taking out all the things that are not the story.”

—Stephen King, On Writing (New York: Pocket, 2002), 47.

The valuable lesson is, when editing a draft, instead of adding more stuff, it is better to remove stuff, to cut down the text, to de-clutter the story.

To come up with an interesting story, feel free to write a lot in your first draft. When you rewrite the draft, feel free to cut it down by taking out unnecessary words and phrases, and by simplifying sentences.

現在您已經寫好故事的草稿，工作也就完成一半了。接下來的重要工作就是編輯。當代暢銷作家史帝芬‧金(Stephen King)在《談寫作》(On Writing: A Memoir of the Craft) 一書中慷慨與我們分享寫作成功的祕密。簡單來說，史帝芬．金的祕密武器就是「清除雜物」。

年輕時，史帝芬．金認識了當地報紙編輯約翰．果德 (John Gould)。果德教史帝芬‧金有關編輯重要的一課。果德修改史帝芬‧金的故事的方式是將字詞刪除，將句子簡化：


「你知道，我只是將不好的部份刪掉，」果德說。「大部分都非常好。」

「當你寫故事時，你是在告訴自己一個故事，」他說。「而當你修改時，主要的工作是把所有不屬於故事的部份刪除。」

這重要的一課是說，修改草稿時，並非加上新的東西，而是要刪，將草稿修短，將故事中雜物消除。

要寫出有趣的故事，在草稿中盡情多寫。而當您編輯草稿時，盡情修剪，把多餘的字詞刪除，並把句子簡化。

"HOME" (搶救地球) by French Filmmaker Luc Besson

(法新社華盛頓6月5日電）影音分享網站YouTube今天宣佈，民眾將可在該網站觀賞法國電影導演盧貝松（Luc Besson）監製的地球環保紀錄片「盧貝松之搶救地球」（Home），該片目前同時在戲院上映。

　　YouTube在官方網站上表示，這將是「全球觀眾首度能同時在網路、電影院、電視頻道與露天電影放映場觀賞一部電影。」

YouTube說，直到14日為主，網友可在該網站收看法語、英語、西班牙語、德語、俄語與葡萄牙語等版本影片，該片導演為亞祖貝彤（Yann Arthus-Bertrand）。

Second Step to Writing Creatively: Write something that matters to you. 英文創作第二招：寫出對您很重要的事

We hope you have relaxed yourself and warmed up by writing freely for a few minutes. Now is the time to think about the topic of your writing. Remember the two things we mentioned in the “First Step to Writing Creatively:” (1) You can be a writer as long as you feel and think. (2) Your ideas are interesting because they reflect your unique way of looking at the world.

We still have to come up with a specific topic for your writing, because you cannot write about everything in one single story or poem. Our advice is: Write something that matters to you. Write something that you have feelings about. Write something that you have the urge of telling your best friend about. Treat your readers as your best friends, with whom you share the most important things in your life and the most special feelings you have experienced.

Take the example of the theme of the English Creative Writing Contest: “NCCU & me.” You may ask yourself some questions to explore for a topic—What is the most vivid image that occurs to you when you think of your life at NCCU? Who is the first person that comes to your mind? Do you hear any sounds in your head? Do you smell any aroma from your memory? When is the time of the day when you think our campus is magical? Do you think of any special day or event that left unerasable marks on your heart?

When you think through these questions, take notes on a piece of paper. Your notes can consist of words and drawings. You can also place some special photos or pictures on your desk to inspire you. Once you feel inspired and you feel the urge to write, let yourself go. Start writing a story or a poem. Do not worry about spelling, grammar or logic. You will edit your writing afterwards.

希望您已經放鬆，也自由寫作了幾分鐘暖身。現在可以想想您的寫作主題。記得我們在「英文創作第一招」所提到的兩件事：一、只要您能感受、思考，就能成為作家。二、您的想法是有趣的，因為它反應您對於這個世界獨特的看法。

我們還是要為您的作品想出一個題目，因為一個故事或是一首詩裡沒辦法寫所有的事情。我們的建議是：寫出對您很重要的事。寫您有感覺的事。寫您很想和好朋友說的事。將您的讀者當作好朋友，與他們分享您生命中最重要的事、最獨特的心情。

舉例來說，這次英文創作比賽的主題是「政大與我」。您可以問自己一些問題來尋找題目—當您想到在政大的生活時，腦中出現最鮮明的圖像是什麼？您第一位想到的人是誰？您從記憶裡聽到任何聲音嗎？您從記憶裡聞到任何香味嗎？一天中，哪個時間校園是最奇幻的？哪一天或是哪項活動在您心中留下不可磨滅的痕跡？

當您思考這些問題時，在一張紙上做筆記。您的筆記可以是字也可以是圖。您還可以在書桌上放置能引起您靈感的特別的照片或圖片。當您覺得靈感來了，心中充滿了寫作的情緒，就讓自己盡情發揮。開始寫一個故事或一首詩。不必擔心拼字、文法或邏輯。之後，您會再修改初稿的。

First Step to Writing Creatively: Relax, relax, relax. Remember to breathe, breathe naturally.英文創作第一招：放鬆、放鬆、再放鬆。記得呼吸、自然地呼吸。

Before we introduce the First Step to Writing Creatively, there are two things that we’d like you to bear in mind:

1. Everyone can write and can be a writer. You can be a writer as long as you feel and think.
2. Whatever ideas that come up to your mind are valuable because they represent your unique ways to look at the world which we all live in; and they reflect your inner world as well.

Now, we will tell you the first step to warm up before you start writing. Let us begin with the personal experience of one of our staff:

“When I was a child, I used to sing in the school choir. The leader of the choir would tell us to run for 10 to 15 minutes before we began our daily practice. The purpose of the run was not only to train our lungs in order to have more capacity to sing but also to relax our bodies and minds so that we could express ourselves more freely through singing.”

Warming up to writing is not much different from warming up to singing. You don’t necessarily need to run before you sit down and write, but you know you will not be able to write creatively if your hand muscles are tense or if your mind is tense. Just by reminding yourself to relax, to breathe and to breathe naturally, you will begin to loosen up and feel free to create.

Physical exercise would help, of course. Take a walk, stretch your body, and then sit down and let your writing be free. Write down any words and ideas that come to your mind. Don’t worry about grammar or logic (you can fix them later). Just write freely for a few minutes. Do not cross out or throw away anything you have written down. You will come back to them later and discover some interesting ideas that you may develop into a story or a poem.

寫作熱身和歌唱熱身並沒有太大的不同。您不一定要在坐下來寫作之前跑步，可是您知道，如果手部肌肉緊繃或是心情緊繃，是沒法進行創意寫作的。只要您提醒自己放鬆、呼吸、自然地呼吸，您就會開放自我、自由地創作。

體能運動當然是有幫助的。散步走走、伸展四肢，然後坐下來自由書寫。寫下任何飛入您腦中的字詞、想法，不要擔心文法或邏輯（之後可以修改的）。就這樣自由書寫幾分鐘。別刪除或丟掉任何寫下的文字。之後回頭來看，您會發現有趣的想法是可以發展成為一個故事或一首詩的。

Give your brain a break! – Steps to Writing Creatively 腦力放假：英文創作技巧分享

Summer vacation is around the corner, and it’s time for you to give your brain a break. Enjoy the warm weather, walk on the beach, hike in the mountains, or avoid the heat by reading in an air-conditioned library or bookstore something that has nothing to do with your textbooks. And … do something creative! Write something creative! Make this summer special by writing a story or a poem in English, a piece of writing that is uniquely yours. You will make this summer a memorable one, and you will continue enjoying writing creatively for the rest of your life.

We will be sharing with you “Steps to Writing Creatively” to warm you up to writing creatively.
